Michael Bradshaw is no stranger to the black rich Barbadian soil, he grew up farming with his family in Christ Church, Barbados and it was there where his love for the land originated. His father and mother always provided for his large family through growing their own food and taking their excess to market.
When speaking with Michael about how he came to this point of living as an organic farmer, the reverence and respect for his parents is undeniable. His father’s eye for perfection resulted in a younger Michael having to re-dig planting holes if not perfectly lined to his father’s satisfaction.
Since 1997, Michael has been a member of the Organic Growers and Consumers Association. He has worked the 2 acres of land now called Eden Organic Farm, St.Lucy for the past 22 years. He grows 3 varieties of kale, mustard greens, arugula/rocket, purslane, pusley, chard, carrots, beets, okra, pumpkin, melon, paw-paw/papaya, 12 variations of mangoes and much more.
Michael has remained dedicated to growing since his childhood. Time and time again in conversations with him, you hear it in his voice, see it in his smile and feel it in his expression that he truly loves what he does. Furthermore, even though there is not always the community support which he hopes for, he is not discouraged from his role on earth and that is - to grow good food.
