Pelt waist not waste. The earth has weight.

For Crop Over and any other Caribbean festival..carnival...all of them - we need to mind our waste and #dobetter for a Better Caribbean.

Do Better Campaign - Step 1. Drink More Water. Step 2 + 3 = R &R.

What Rest and Relaxation??? As if most of us think about resting at this time of year -_-.

Big R #1 - Reduce

Most soca songs and almost every summer advertisement encourages you to consume more, drink more and do more so you can enjoy your summer more. All of this over consumption generates more waste than our islands can handle right now. Before you say I'm trying to steal your summer fun by telling you to slow down on the overdweet-ing of everything - let's just try to at least mind our waste by reducing our litter with this simple step -

Put your garbage where it is supposed to be.

*Gasp* It is that easy. Can we please? It won't cost you a cent but not doing it costs us tremendously.

Yes the odds are that there are never enough garbage containers where ever you are or the garbage container is not always set up as conveniently as possible, but it won't hurt you (I promise!) to hold onto the garbage until you can find a bin. Take a plastic bag for your garbage with you to the beach or anywhere else where you expect to create garbage, just don't do this -

Big R #2 - Reuse.

Where ever you can - cups, takeout containers, shopping bags (not styrofoam or single use/non-BPA free plastic though).

Just because there is someone to clean up the road, the business or venue where you are - it doesn't mean that you need to generate and pelt your garbage thoughtlessly.

What if the wind catches and blows it onto our beautiful beaches we treasure so much or into the road to cause an accident? Or worse into our gardens and farms where we are growing food.

If this is obvious to you, when you see someone pelting way something other than in a garbage, simply point out the nearest garbage for them.

No bassa bassa necessary, just give them the information they must be lacking.

Drink, eat and enjoy your summer but please - Pelt waist not waste.

<---Why am I writing this? I am an environmental scientist by training and am permanently vexed by litter. I like clean public bathrooms as well.

Thanks for reading.
